Years, or maybe just a year, there was an argument somewhere that pre-16th century English recipes were referring to cloves (the spice) and not clove pinks (the flower)... that there was no evidence...
It all came rushing back after re-reading "Fourme of Curye"... "styke a bove clowes de gylofre" could we say for sure either way? Sadly, we have lots of argument suggesting either but no real proof... no paintings or drawings except those from the 16th century and they show food studded with either.
